Late in 1957, believers from Newton approached the Committee on Evangelism
of the Southern District MB Conference with the request to begin
a church. After investigating, the committee called Lynford Becker
to begin this work. On May 4, 1958 those interested held the first
formal service in the Newton City Auditorium with thirty-eight in
attendance. On May 18 the group opened charter membership which
closed August 20 with thirty-seven members. In September the congregation
began construction of an educational wing in the new Koerner Heights
Addition which was to serve as a temporary sanctuary. This building
was dedicated May 3, 1959.
Within two years average attendance had risen to 120, so the congregation
expanded the educational wing to increase educational and worship
space. The church continued to grow rapidly and in September 1971
the congregation began the construction of a sanctuary building
seating 300 with nursery rooms, offices, a library, a youth room,
classrooms, a kitchen and fellowship hall, and a full basement.
Dedication was held June 4, 1972. In 1979 the church purchased a
nearby building to serve as a ministry center (office). For a number
of years the church conducted two worship services each Sunday with
about 360 regularly attending one service or the other and 85 to
90 percent participating in Sunday School. The church became the
mother church of the Hesston church in 1978 and the Halstead Church
in 1989. Average attendance reached 512 in 1988.
The decade of the 90's was a period of declining attendance and
participation, ending in 1997 with a group forming a new church
not affiliated with the conference.
Today, the congregation is revitalized and once again growing and
serving in new ways. Local mothers are offered a free morning out
twice each month, an active senior citizen's group meets, and attendance
is increasing in Sunday School and worship gatherings.
Pastors who have served the church are Lynford J. Becker 1957-64,
